The embroiderers (bordadoras) of the Yucatán State in Mexico, especially in the towns of Mani and Valladolid, have developed an integrated system of co-ops to turn embroidery from a traditional handicraft into a specialized occupation. They have learned to divide their labor more efficiently, to use a computer to design new products, to find new markets, and how to calculate a fair price thus avoiding the often times unfair middleperson. This offers them a reliable source of income while enhancing their self-esteem and their appreciation for their culture.
