This boy from the town of Pampatar, in the Venezuelan island of Margarita, sits amidst brightly colored peñero fishing boats and waves at the camera as if greeting the New Year, smiling despite the political, economic, and social uncertainties that face his country. Such is the nature and temperament of the peoples that inhabit the Venezuelan coastal communities: jovial and cheerful, joyful and carefree, faithfully trusting the ostensibly endless bounties of the Caribbean Sea.

“Te lo dige” [sic] means “I told you so” in Spanish. The owner of the boat used the correct spelling, “Te lo dije” on the other side of the boat.
