Venezuela suffers from the world’s highest inflation rate (720% in 2016, a number that many view as optimistic given the current drama of the country), a poverty rate between 75% and 80%, one of the highest murder rates in the world, and persistent unavailability of basic goods. Electricity outages and scarcity of raw materials are pressing the few outlasting factories and stores to close.
The most serious problem is that the country is dreadfully running short of food and medicine, facing a disaster of humanitarian proportions. Venezuelans occupy much of their time in long lines outside retailers and supermarkets, but gradually the shelves are more and more empty.
The populist, authoritarian dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro is attempting to cling to power despite a strong opposition by increasing state control over the economy and all public powers, maintaining strict controls over the media and the currency exchange, and blatantly violating the most basic human rights.
Try explaining this to a mother or father desperate to secure their own survival and that of their children today and in the future.

Las interrupciones de electricidad y la escasez de materias primas están presionando a las pocas fábricas y almacenes para cerrar.

La dictadura populista y autoritaria de Nicolás Maduro está intentando aferrarse al poder a pesar de una fuerte oposición, mediante el aumento del control estatal sobre la economí¬a y los poderes públicos, manteniendo estrictos controles sobre los medios de comunicación, el intercambio de divisas, y violando abiertamente los más básicos derechos humanos.
Trate de explicar esto a una madre o padre desesperado por asegurar la sobrevivencia diaria tanto de ellos como la de sus hijos, hoy y mañana.
