Venezuela has been shaken by 50 days of protests, mostly in the capital, Caracas, that have left at least 34 people dead and 3000 arrested. So far these protests have failed to bring about any change in Venezuela.
The protestors (opposed to the regime of Nicolas Maduro) have four main exigencies: new elections; the release of political prisoners; the establishment of a “humanitarian channel” to overcome food and medicine shortages; and lastly, full acknowledgment of the authority of the National Assembly, which is dominated by the opposition.
Amidst all this turmoil, there is a group of about 200 youth (18-25 years old) who call themselves “Warriors of the Resistance” who confront the security forces during the marches. They also call themselves “shields” or “protectors” and have taken very seriously their leading role in these clashes. They use rocks, Molotov cocktails, and other rudimentary weapons to confront the uniformed National Guard and the National Police equipped with tear gas, water tanks, and other violent measures of riot control.
Ostensibly these groups do not belong to any political group. So far no organization has claimed responsibility for their activism. As well, nobody has gauged the effectiveness of these groups, whether their fight benefits the opposition or whether they generate more violence. One thing is for sure: they boost the morale of the Venezuelan people and provide a solid, forceful, strong image of the resistance. They set an example and give us strength to carry on against the bloody dictatorial regime of Nicolas Maduro.

Los manifestantes (opuestos al régimen de Nicolás Maduro) tienen cuatro exigencias principales: nuevas elecciones; la liberación de presos polí¬ticos; el establecimiento de un “canal humanitario” para superar la escasez de alimentos y medicinas; y, por último, el pleno reconocimiento de la autoridad de la Asamblea Nacional, que está dominada por la oposició
En medio de toda esta agitación hay un grupo de unos 200 jóvenes (18-25 años) que se llaman a sí¬ mismos “Guerreros de la Resistencia” y que enfrentan a las fuerzas de seguridad durante las marchas. También se llaman “escudos” o “protectors” y han tomado muy en serio su papel de liderazgo en estos enfrentamientos. Utilizan rocas, cocteles Molotov, y otras armas rudimentarias para enfrentarse a la Guardia Nacional Uniformada y a la Policí¬a Nacional equipada con gas lacrimógeno, tanques de agua, y otras medidas violentas de control de disturbios.
Aparentemente estos grupos no pertenecen a ninguna organización polí¬tica. Hasta ahora ninguna organización ha reclamado la responsabilidad de su activismo. Además, nadie ha evaluado la efectividad de estos grupos, ya sea que su lucha beneficie al pueblo venezolano o si generan más violencia. Una cosa es segura: aumentan la moral de la oposición y proporcionan una imagen sólida, contundente, y fuerte de la resistencia. Nos dan un ejemplo y nos dan fuerzas para seguir adelante contra el sangriento régimen dictatorial de Nicolás Maduro.
