Nepal is synonymous with trekking the Himalayas, but its chaotic, striking, and welcoming cities also have distinct uniqueness: the streets are narrow, dusty, and crowded, and the traffic of people, motorbikes, and tuk-tuks is exacerbated by an occasional sacred cow blocking the way. The cities are a hotchpotch of temples and stupas crammed with pilgrims from all over the world, Hindus and Buddhists and Atheists walk together alongside the streets under flapping prayer flags, and unhurried backpackers relax while they watch people go by in the many hidden squares of Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, or Thamel. With such an intense and tightly interlaced fusion of cultures dating back thousands of years, Nepal is known as the Land of a Thousand Temples.
Visitors might come to Nepal for the scenery and the trekking, but one of the most prevailing memories they will have will be the intrinsic openness of the local people. During my five weeks of direct interaction with the residents of Nepal as an educator and as a photographer, I did not once come across anyone who wasn’t friendly, welcoming, and approachable. Indeed, there is no doubt that Nepali people live up to their reputation for being warm, inviting and helpful. My images of the month for May, 2018 are dedicated with love and gratitude to the peoples of Nepal, especially my students, the members of the World Academy for the Future of Women-Nepal, who bestowed upon me the privilege of sharing with them the beauty of their culture. Nepal es sinónimo de senderismo en el Himalaya, pero sus ciudades caóticas, impactantes, y acogedoras, también tienen una singularidad distintiva: las calles son estrechas, polvorientas, y atestadas, y el tráfico de personas, motocicletas, y tuk-tuks es exarcerbado por una ocasional vaca sagrada que bloquea el camino. Las ciudades son una mezcolanza de templos y estupas abarrotadas de peregrinos provenientes de todo el mundo: hindúes, budistas, y ateos caminan juntos bajo coloridas banderas de oración que vuelan al viento, y mochileros sin prisas se relajan mientras miran pasar a la gente en las muchas plazas escondidas de Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, o Thamel. Con una fusión de culturas tan entrelazada que data de miles de años, Nepal es conocida como la Tierra de los Mil Templos.
Puede que los visitantes vengan a Nepal por el paisaje y el senderismo, pero uno de los recuerdos que prevalecerán será lo abierto y amistoso de la agente local. Durante mis cinco semanas de interacción directa con los residentes de Nepal como educadora y fotógrafa, no encontré a nadie que no fuera amigable, acogedor, y accesible.
