The garments of the Guatemalan people are distinctive and staggeringly beautiful in design and pigment. Every group or township in Guatemala has its own clothes, woven by its people usually on their basic household loom, with the long-established imagery of their history and ancient gods shaping the pattern. If one sees a woman or a man walking by, one is able to tell what town they come from, and often, whether the woman is married -by the way she wears her skirt-, whether the man has children, and what is their status among their people.
Unfortunately, the persistence with which these people have held on to their dress, their customs, and their way of life for 500 years under various foreign occupations, is vanishing fast under the influence of proselytizers, tourism, social media, and large-scale economies.

Las prendas de vestir del pueblo guatemalteco son distintivas y asombrosamente hermosas en diseño y pigmento. Cada grupo o municipio en Guatemala tiene su propia ropa, tejida por su gente generalmente en su básico telar doméstico, en el cual las imágenes establecidas de su historia y dioses antiguos desde hace mucho tiempo dan forma al diseño. Si una persona ve pasar a una mujer o un hombre, puede saber de qué pueblo viene y, a menudo, también puede saber si la mujer está casada -por la forma en que lleva la falda-, si el hombre tiene hijos, y cuál es su estatus entre su gente.
Desafortunadamente, la persistencia con la que estas personas se han aferrado a su vestimenta, sus costumbres y su forma de vida durante 500 años bajo diversas ocupaciones extranjeras, se está desvaneciendo rápidamente bajo la influencia de los proselitistas, el turismo, las redes sociales y las economías a gran escala.
