Greece, also known as Hellas and officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country in southeastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The country has borders with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. The Aegean Sea lies to the east and south of mainland Greece, while the Ionian Sea lies to the west. Both parts of the Eastern Mediterranean basin feature a vast number of islands, islets and rock islands.

The farming of sheep and goats is the most important activity in the animal production sector of Greece, both in terms of employment (about 300,000 families) and overall income (45% of the gross value of animal production). There are 9,200,000 sheep and 5,600,000 goats, of which 95% of the adult females are milked, primarily for cheese production.
